Wrinkles and Signs of Aging: The Appropriate Treatments

Wrinkles and signs of aging stem from a variety of factors. The type of wrinkles or signs you exhibit determines the treatments that may benefit you most.

Static Wrinkles. These are a result of gravity and loss of elasticity in the skin. You’ll commonly find them in the lower portion of the face. They will be in the nasolabial folds, which extend from the lower corners of the mouth to the chin.

Dynamic Wrinkles. These wrinkles are a result of facial muscle activity. These appear in the top third of the face. Dynamic wrinkles include horizontal forehead wrinkles, crow's feet, and creases between the eyebrows.

Facial Aging. One of the main factors of facial aging is volume loss. This first appears as a flattening of the cheeks and the skin around the mouth. Marionette lines will start to lead from the lower corners of the mouth down to the chin. You may notice a valley from the inner corner of your eye down to the cheek. This valley creates what’s called a tear trough.

The best treatments for facial aging and static wrinkles are dermal fillers. For dynamic wrinkles, patients see the best results from botulism toxin injections like Botox or Dysport. Dr. Copeland also uses Botox for cosmetic purposes, such as lifting the eyebrows or straightening out the lips.

Botox and Dysport

Botox is the trademark name for Allergan’s botulism toxin treatment. Dysport is another popular botulism toxin product produced by Medicis. These are the only two muscle relaxant products the FDA has approved for cosmetic treatment - and they are the only two that Dr. Katie Copeland uses. This is to ensure her patients don't have serious complications associated with unapproved methods.

Botulism toxin has been used for over twenty years. It first became popular for medical treatments for eyelid tremors, neuromuscular diseases, and facial nerve disorders. As doctors were utilizing it to treat facial nerve conditions, they realized it improved the look of facial wrinkles. Now, Botox cosmetic uses are common and regarded as safe. To this day, there have not been any systemic allergies to the ingredients.

Botox vs. Dysport: Which One Is for You?

The best candidate for Dysport or Botox treatment is a man or woman who is healthy. Anyone who undergoes treatment should have realistic expectations for the procedure. Our patients opt for these methods when they wish to improve the appearance of their upper facial wrinkles.

Both Botox and Dysport can treat facial dynamic wrinkles in the upper portion of the face. Injections in the crease between the eyebrows create a more youthful appearance. Brow lifts are also possible with these treatments. When used around the outer eyes near crows' feet, the skin regains a smoother appearance. Both methods are also minimally invasive. Neither Botox nor Dysport requires surgery.

Both products are approved for use with additional cosmetic procedures for an overall improved appearance. Don’t let Botox or Dysport injections keep you from considering other cosmetic surgical procedures! These kinds of injections only enhance the results of cosmetic surgical procedures.

Derma-filler

Dermal Fillers

Dermal fillers are a minimally invasive procedure. The doctor places the fillers just below the skin’s surface. These help to smooth out wrinkles on the lower portion of the face. If you’re seeking to regain a youthful appearance while still maintaining a natural look, dermal fillers might be for you.

Dr. Copeland is highly skilled and experienced with dermal fillers. By enhancing each patient’s unique features and correcting facial aging, she is able to create a youthful and natural appearance.

Types of Dermal Fillers

There are two kinds of dermal fillers:

  • Hyaluronic acids (Juvederm, Restylane)

The hyaluronic acids last about five to six months. They correct tear troughs, lines in nasolabial folds, marionette lines, and lips.

  • Calcium hydroxyapatite fillers (Radiesse)

Calcium hydroxyapatite fillers are great for deeper nasolabial folds and cheek augmentation.

Botox & Dermal Filler Procedure

The process of getting dermal fillers is minimally invasive and quick. First, the doctor applies a topical anesthetic to help numb the skin. Then, the application of pressure at certain points helps to decrease any discomfort. While that's happening, Dr. Copeland injects the dermal fillers or botox.

Once the treatment is complete, you’ll want to apply an ice pack for up to an hour. There are no limitations to activity. Just take it as easy as you’d like. There’s a small chance of slight bruising, so it’s smart to avoid the procedure right before a big event.
